A Promise to Ponder Vol. 1 Issue 1

Ephesians 1:11 - In whom also we have obtained an inheritance…

Obtained – verb (used with object)

1. to come into possession of; get, acquire, or procure, as through an effort or by a request: to obtain permission; to obtain a better income.

Inheritance - a heritage, private possession.

Take a close look at this promise, any particular word jump out? If any did it probably wasn’t “also” was it. This word, however, is actually very important. What does the word “also” mean? It is adding to a list, for example, when you tell your kids to do something you will often say “Take out the trash, clean your room and “also” don’t forget to clean the kitchen.” When you say the word “also” you have added to the list, so what does this mean to us in this verse? This means that this “obtained…inheritance” has been added to a list. You may not see the list at first glance, I didn’t. The list begins in verse seven of this same chapter which says “7. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;” This verse along with our verse for today is saying that in Christ we “have redemption through his blood…the forgiveness of sins…also we have obtained an inheritance.” What a list!!! All of this Christ has given us, the question becomes what have we given Him? We have given Him our sin, heartaches, and burdens just to name a few things that we have given Him. Is this a fair trade? No, and aren’t you glad! This promise of an inheritance, along with everything else, makes me want to serve Him better. Thank God that We can because He has also given us power! What a promise!
